ViaVoice Tips
For IBM ViaVoice
Here are some tips and tricks to get the most out of your IBM ViaVoice
software!
- It is worth the extra investment to buy the ViaVoice Pro version
- USB microphone connections are the best
- Plantronics DSP-500 is the best microphone we have tested
- ViaVoice 10 does not work with Microsoft Office 2003 - wait for version
10.5 if you already have MS Office 2003
- Some problems have been reported with Windows XP Service Pack 2
- Always have a glass of water to sip to keep your voice fresh - just as a
public speaker would.
- If the noise level around you changes - redo your audio setup level.
- When you speak a command - always say it as if the words were attached
without a pause like "Computer-Bold-This".
- If you find short words like "an" "a" and "the" appearing when you did not
speak them - raise the height of your mic to nose level to reduce puffs.
- While voice recognition and speech recognition are often used interchangeably
- ViaVoice is really speech recognition.
- If ViaVoice splits a single word you spoke into two - choose both words when
you make the correction.
- If you make a macro, always make your trigger words at least two or three
words said without a pause.
- A mistake when you are dictating is not a "typo" but is a "speako".
- Use your playback in the correction window to hear your mistakes - try to
understand why ViaVoice made the mistake.
- Canadian (British) spelling is available through the ViaVoice dictionary.
Make corrections and ViaVoice will learn to use the Canadian version of the word
first.
- If you change the type or model of microphone - you may need to do a new
profile if your accuracy is poor. We sound different to ViaVoice through
different mics.
- If you want to start Word but not launch ViaVoice too - hold the SHIFT KEY
down after you click on Word until it is loaded.
- If your voice is very different in the morning or afternoon - redo your audio
setup level.
- ViaVoice is more accurate if you speak in phrases or sentences rather than a
single word at a time.
- If you regularly have colds or allergies that changes how you sound, start a
second "cold" voice profile to use.
- When using formatting or navigation commands - always include the word
"Computer" in the phrase so ViaVoice does not think it is dictation.
- Correction is the best friend of future accuracy.
- The "Sounds like" area in the pronunciation window allows you to put how a
words "sounds" if it is different than how it is spelled. For example, the fruit
"kiwi" is pronounced "kee-wee" not kye-wye as the letters suggest.
- If you notice a sudden loss of accuracy - redo your audio setup level.
- It does not generally help recognition to do more than one pair of stories.
- Always do your corrections before you save your work - otherwise ViaVoice
thinks it got it right.
- Save your work as a "Session" when you want to have someone else do your
corrections or if you want to do them later.
